Pre- Contact
The Native Hawaiians values were to care for, protect, Malama. To love, have compassion, respect, Aloha. To share, be generous, Lokomaikai. To be healthy, work, Olakino Maikai. To take responsibility, Hookuleana. To seek knowledge, Imike. To nurture a deep sense of justice, Naa Pono. Aside from valuing the Guiding human values, in Hawaiian society, the person is expected to understand and know what it means to be a contributing member of the community. The Native Hawaiians valued their family, or also known as, Ohana. The ohana was not only blood related relatives, but also others who were considered to be ohana were accepted by the family. This also regards to the the aumakua which is the ancestral guardian spirit of the family. The Native Hawaiians also defined themselves by their relationships to each other and their land. These are the bonds of interconnectedness and with out it, it would be incomplete. The parents would fish and farm, while the children carried water, food, and other material that would help build a house, canoe, and other items. The children were taught by watching and doing. The Hawaiians also valued their land and took very good care of it because that's what they needed to survive.
Post- Contact
The Hawaiian morals and values have not really changed since the past. The Hawaiians still cherish and value their family. Today in Hawaii, the ohana would be considered the unit that provides shelter, food, love, support, security, and the educational foundation that will provide stability for the younger generation who will be taught and shown the morals and values of the ohana. But today ohana is used generally more in terms of any group of people who have a common bond.
Future
In the future, I see that the meaning of ohana will still be intact and will still have the same values that it did 100 years ago. The meaning of ohana will not die down because ohana 100 years ago still meant what it means today. Grandpas and grandmas will pass down what ohana means to their grandchildren and their grandchildren will alywas remember if reminded. Ohana will never be forgotten because in English, ohana mean family, and family holds such a great impact in a persons life. A person cannot forget the meaning of ohana or family. The family will still value their land because much of their land was given to them and they have to keep the family going!
