Past
It was estimated that there was an average population of about 800,000 to 1 million Hawaiian people inhabiting Hawaii before captain cook came. Population growth was substantial and even reached a peak in the seventeenth century. Hawaiians were fairly healthy people due to their organic lifestyle and the fact that they utilized the resources on the island. It even remained pretty constant until Cook and the westerners came. That was when the Hawaiian population began to decline.
Present
When Captain Cook came to the Hawaiian islands he brought new races of people and diseases. The Hawaiian population began to decline for two main reasons. One reason was that the westerners brought diseases along with them. Hawaiian immune systems were not used to these new diseases and they were not able to sustain themselves and fight off the sicknesses so they ended up dying. Another reason is that the westerners began procreating with the Hawaiian people which meant that they were beginning to mix races and were starting to deplete the pure Hawaiian population.
The pie chart below shows present day Hawaiian and the ethnicity population. As you can see the pure Hawaiian population has depleted down to a mere ten percent.
