Past: The kapu system goverened the lives of all classes of Hawaiian society. The society was ruled by the ali'i , who held their positions because of their family history and thier capability as rulers. The man who ruled over all of the chiefs was the ali'i nui. Each ali'i nui was assisted by a kalaimoku (counselor) who offered advice to the ali'i on how the land should be distributed among the konohiki, who managed the work of an ahupua'a. Next to the ali'i in power was the Kuhina nui. Who than offered advice to the ali'i , conducted cermonies in the heiau, and counseled the ali'i on how to act to retain the favor of the gods. The ali'i ruled the Makaʻāinana. (the common people). The common people did the work of the community. The last of the class in old Hawai'i was the Kauwā. (outcasts or slaves).
