Past: Kalakaua is known fo reviving the hula. For many years hula was abolished by the missionaries. In 1883, Kalakaua celeberated his ninth anniversary on the throne with an decorated coronation cermoney at 'Iolani Palace. The festivities went on for two weeks, and every night hula was danced. Kalakau hosted the entertainment of the storybook like-appearance of the balls at 'Iolani Palace. Hawaiians would take joy in a variety of pā‘ani (sports and games), many of them were part of rituals and cermonies. A traditional loop and ball game was known as pala'ie. Playing kōnane which is similar to playing checkers, and was played using pebbles on a stone or wood surface. Hawaiians also played many contests using their strength and balance, including uma and pā uma (hand and wrist wrestling), kula‘i wāwae (foot pushing), heihei kūkini (foot races), and hākōkō (wrestling).
