Past: Kapiolani Maternity Hopsital was built to provide free medical care for Hawaiian mothers and their infants. Epidemics were killing the hawaiian population since they they did not have any immunity to the foreigner's diseases. Teething and colds killed Hawaiian infants. Adults died of the measles, smallpox, cholera, whooping cough, influenza, and venereal disease. From 1853 to 1856, at least ten thousand Hawaiians died of the smallpox. Alcoholism also killed Hawaiians. Drinking seemed a way to cope with the ordeal of social change.
Present: Hawaii's health insurance premiums are closley tied with North Dakota for the lowest in the country, and Medicare costs for each beneficiary are at the nation's lowest. People living in Hawaii live longer than the rest of the country. For exampl, Hawaii has the nation's highest occurence of breast cancer but has the lowest death rate from this disease.
Future:
Heath system will (hopefully) get better.
We wont have to travel to hawaii or california to have good health services.
Building of more hospitals and increased technology.
More doctors coming from the mainland.
